The Benefits Of A Blog
Blogs are useful, not only for prepubescent teens, but for anyone who owns a website and is trying to improve their ranking on search engines.
Back in the late 90's and the early 2000's, if you thought of a blog, you would be forgiven to think of something like a myspace or geocities page with comic sans fonts, background music that auto plays and marquee banners. While most of these are deadly sins against UX/UI design principals, if one were to persevere and gather a loyal and growing reader base, they could eventually start running ads on their pages, or link off to affiliate marketing, and start to make some passive income.
But search engines were numerous back then. Altavista, anyone? Yahoo? Nowadays the search engine landscape is dominated by a monopoly - Google (lol sorry Bing). And with it the techniques that were once used to rank highly in search engines are now considered spam tactics. You can still find them littered around in old websites that haven't been maintained. You've probably seen them before - websites jam-packed with random keywords that make no sense on their own. Google have fine tuned their search algorithm now and websites that do that tend to be ranked lower as a result.
But hang on a second, I hear you say, aren't keywords an important part of Search Engine Optimisation (S.E.O)? Yes, but it's how they're used that's important. They need to be part of useful content that matches search intent - not just a paragraph of words separated by commas.
But hang on a second, I hear you say again, my website is like a brochure for my business. I don't update it all the time, so wouldn't i suffer from some kind of time decay in regards to these keywords? The answer is maybe. Some of your keywords may be bullet proof, and people may always be searching these up. But others may rank higher or lower in different points in time. The real question then, is how can we take advantage of this evolve nature of SEO and keywords in a brochure website like for a tradie, for example, who may not need to change their information for a long time?
The answer is: a Blog! And with that we've come full circle.
Using a blog, a business can provide frequent updates to their website, giving it fresh content to be search for, and providing more and newer keywords to rank higher on. By tailoring blog posts to useful topics, you could fulfill search intent for strategic keywords and improve your SEO score.
And by using a content management system as part of your website, you as a business owner, who knows nothing about coding or web stuff, can still write and publish blog posts to your own website, helping you stay relevant in the world of Google.
